Abstracts

A Comparative Study on Oral Health between Children From Government and Private Schools

Objective:

To compare oral health and its awareness among Government and Private school children and to identify the factors related to poor oral health.

Methods:

The study design is a cross-sectional survey. Surveys were conducted simultaneously in a private school and a government school. The private school was Marion Villa Convent, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram and the government school was Government Upper primary school, Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram. The numbers of students included in the study were 74 and 91 respectively. The study was conducted between 28^th October and 28^th of December of 2004. A structured interview schedule was used for data collection.

Results and Conclusion:

All the children included were in 10 to 13 year age group. The proportions of girls were 52.7% in the private school and 49.5% in the government school. The awareness of oral hygiene was high in the private school with 31% of the students have good knowledge in comparison with 10% in the government school. The proportion of good oral health practice were 37.8% in private and 12.1% in government schools. The proportions of dental caries were found to be 56.8% in private school and 59.4% in government school.

Risk Factors of Coronary Artery Disease – A Case Control Study Conducted in Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram

Objective:

To find out the risk factors of Coronary Artery Disease among patients attended in Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram

Methods:

The study design was case control and the setting was Medical College Hospital, Thiruvanathapuram. The sample size of the study was 150 with a case control ratio of 1:2. The study was conducted in 2004. The effect measures were interpreted using odd’s ratios and significance of associations was tested using Chi-square test.

Results and conclusions:

All participants were in the age group of 30 to 80. The proportion of women was 46% in the case group while 69% in the control arm. The factors significantly related to Myocardial infarction were alcoholism (OR-3.53, p<0.001), hypertension (OR-5.3, p<0.001) and smoking habit (p<0.005).

The Knowledge Awareness and Practices of the Residents of Vizhinjam Coastal Village Related to the Outbreak of Diarrheal Disease

Objective:

To study the knowledge, attitude and practices related to diarrheal diseases in a coastal village in Thiruvananthapuram

Methods:

The design of the study is cross-sectional conducted in the Vizhinjam coastal village in Thiruvananthapuram. The sample size of the study is 100; all are residents of the Vizhinjam coastal village. The study period was September 2004.

Results and Conclusion

The participants of the study were in the age group 10 to 80. The proportion of women was 67%. Christians were the major religious group with 49% of participants. Type of drinking water source is well in 53%, common source in 36% and pipe connection in 11% of people. According to 47% of people, polluted water is the major risk of Diarrhea; 46% are aware of the unhygienic practices.
